HELP PROTECT LAKE COUNTY FROM GMOs! |
Sometime during April of this year the Lake County board of supervisors will vote on whether or not to enact a GMO (genetically modified organism) ban similar to the one recently passed in Mendocino, where it won by a wide margin in spite of being outspent 10-1 by the opposition! Lake County growers are now at a distinct marketing disadvantage when competing against Mendocino pears and wine grapes in particular, and our natural plant life is unprotected from possible destruction by GMO seeds and plants, which could become the dominant species if introduced to our environment. Lake County growers want to be able to sell their crops in places like Japan and Europe, where there are restrictions or bans on GMOs, because these export markets are a very large part of our wine grape and walnut customer base, without them those two industries would collapse. We could take the matter to the voters of Lake County, but it would take tens of thousands of dollars of fundraising to fight off the lies of Croplife and the other mega-corporations that flooded the airwaves and print media with their disinformation campaign, theres no reason for all that when the board of supervisors can to it with a simple vote.
What can you do? Plenty, starting with contacting your county supervisor and letting him know how you feel about the issue. RobBrown rbrown@pacific.net

E-mail or call them all at 263-2368 and tell five of your friends to do the same, we need to put pressure on all of them to keep them from being brainwashed by the big money special interests that dont care about our environment or economy. Then come to the Tuesday meeting (well post the date when its confirmed) and show your support in person, there is strength in numbers! For more data on GMOs, check out the http://www.gmofreemendo.com website and use its links for even more facts about GMOs. Make sure to tell your supervisor we need a loophole-free ordinance like Mendos, with no exemptions for rootstocks or other plant or seeds.
