The iris got its name from the Greek goddess Iris, the goddess of the rainbow. Iris personifies the many colored veils of the world's appearances, behind which the goddess works unseen. The goddess Iris as the rainbow was also the bridge between earth and heaven. When Kathy Lewis makes a painting of an iris, she helps us look into the veil's appearance to see the true beauty of nature, created by the hand of the goddess Iris...heaven on earth. Irises are a perfect subject for a watercolor or oil painting, with their soft folds and subtle rainbow colors. Kathy spends days watching an iris mature, from the tightly folded bud, to the classic blossom in its prime, to the fully opened and flat flower, revealing its innermost center.
