Kathy thinks poppies, whether they are Iceland poppies, Oriental poppies, or Matilija poppies, are wonderful flowers to paint. Their crinkly petals create interesting patterns of hard lines and shadows, in contrast to the fluffy, soft, centers. The paintings of all three varieties of poppies on this page were inspired by the flowers in Kathy's garden, and other gardens in Mendocino county, including the McCallum house garden in Mendocino, and the Matilija poppy hedge in front of the Boonville Hotel.
