Kathy has a small pond where she lives in Mendocino County, which she enjoys sitting beside, watching her fish play in the Water Lilies. The plants grow on the bottom of the pond...the blooms and round leaves, notched where the stem is attached, float on the surface, moving with the ripples of the water. The blooms, that may last several days, open each morning and close each evening, giving many opportunities to see a bloom in different configurations. Kathy Lewis enjoys painting water lilies, because they give her a chance to paint the reflections of a crisp white bloom on a liquid blue background. Kathy is inspired by water lilies every time she sees them in her garden, The Butchart Gardens, and Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The first painting on this page, called "Lotus," was featured on the cover of a book named "Broad View, Boundless Heart," published by the Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery.
