Announcements

Dear Troop 122 families and Pack 122 Webelos,

A few announcements:

We had talked about a backpack the weekend of Nov. 8 & 9, one possibility being to Pomo Canyon to combine with working on James' project.  I've got some kind of bug and don't feel up to a campout next weekend, but could make it to a workday at Pomo Canyon to help James with his project.  So, my proposal is that we meet at the church on Saturday Nov. 8 at 8 am and head out for the day at Pomo Canyon, returning around 5 pm.  We can talk more at the troop meeting tomorrow.  If some would like to do it as a backpack, and there are two adults available, then that's still possible.

The Hood Mountain Park environmental camp is available to us for a service project backpack whenever, and I'm thinking January might be a good time for that depending on weather.  It's about a 2 mile hike to the camp.

Secondly, I would like us to do Scouting For Food on Saturday Nov. 15 as a combined activity with Cub Scouts, like we did last year.  We would meet at the church 9 am and collect canned food until noon.

Other announcements:  at troop meeting tomorrow we will be working on fitness:  30 day fitness for Tenderfoot and the Personal Fitness MB testing.  Next week on Nov. 10th I plan to have us do the Constitutional Rights & Obligations requirement for 1st Class - we'll do something that all can participate in.

Regards,

Don

Dear Troop 122 families (and Webelos joining this spring):

Good news!  We have a confirmed reservation for Camp Makuala in Oregon for summer camp next summer.  We got our first choice dates:  July 11-17, which is their week #2.  Our campsite will be the Captain Jack campsite, which looks to be fairly central to the program areas.  Reports from other troops from Santa Rosa area who have attended this camp recently are that it was an outstanding camp.

A preliminary investigation of Amtrak has turned up the following information:  there is a train leaving Sacramento at about midnight on Saturday July 10, arriving in Chemult, Oregon at 9:40 am on Sunday July 11.  On return trip, train leaves Chemult at 8:05 pm on Saturday July 17 and arrives Sacramento 6:15 am on Sunday July 18.  These are the only trains available on the dates we need.

Fares are better than I expected:  $62.90 for students and $74.00 for adults, without any discounts.  There are various discounts available (AAA members, under age 15 traveling with adults, veterans, etc.) which we can use to bring the fares down - we'll need to check details on this.  There are also group rates for groups of 20 or more, but I don't think we'll hit that number this year.

We'll need a shuttle bus from Chemult to camp, which I believe is $10 round trip.  There is an option to go see Crater Lake on the way home, which I think costs another $10.

That's it for now.  Just wanted to pass along the good news.

Regards,

Don

Here's an update on summer camp for 2004.  We have our reservation request in but haven't received confirmation yet.

The dates:  we will travel via Amtrak to Oregon and I believe we will leave from Sacramento the evening of Saturday July 10th arriving in Oregon early morning on Sunday July 11.  There is a shuttle bus from train station to camp.  The camp will run from July 11 to July 17.  We will probably include a tour of Crater Lake on our return home and be on Amtrak sometime the evening of Saturday July 17, returning to Sacramento the morning of July 18.

I talked with a Santa Rosa area troop that went there this last summer and they found that leaving from Sacramento was cheaper than Martinez or Vallejo.  They said the camp was great!  I haven't checked into the Amtrak part yet.

Dear Troop 122 families,

I have contacted County Regional Parks about a backpack into Hood Mountain Park for November, and staying at the Azalea Creek Environmental Camp.  If we can do a little maintenance work while there it sounds like this could be worked out.  The park is open all year, but just Friday through Monday.  We had tentatively scheduled a backpack for the weekend of Nov. 8 & 9, but I'd like to suggest we do it the next weekend of Nov. 15 & 16.

We would shift the canned food drive to Nov. 8 if we shift the backpack date.  Please let me know your thoughts on this and I'll check with Regional Parks about firming it up.

Also, James has the go ahead from Pomo District on his Eagle project and will be scheduling some work days.  So, when we get the information from James please try to help out as much as you can!

We had four Webelos scouts show up for the backpack equipment demonstration and they seemed very interested in what we had to say.

We will be practicing compass work to get ready for Webelos Woods on Oct. 25-26, so please bring compasses to the next few troop meetings.

Lastly, several of you would like to complete the requirement for Constitutional Rights & Obligations.  There are a couple of ways to do this:  meet with a Superior Court judge for a discussion (could consider inviting Troop 121 to join us).  Or we could do a mock jury trial.  I have an excellent package of information for doing a mock trial regarding the sinking of the Titanic and whether the shipping company was negligent.  This could also be done with another small troop to have enough participants. This could be a lot of fun.

Your feedback welcomed. Send an email to Don Dakan.

Dear Troop 122 families,

Please remember to bring your backpacks on Monday with all the gear you would normally take backpacking.  We are getting ready for our demonstration of gear on Sept 29th to potential new scouts.

On Tuesday Sept. 23rd we have been invited to help pack canned food at the Redwood Empire Food bank from 5:30 to 8 PM.  We will meet at the Redwood Empire Food Bank, 3320 Industrial Drive at 5:30.  Carpooling is suggested.  After working we will have pizza, and scouts will be dropped off at homes around 8 PM.

There are two events planned for October.  October 10-12 (Friday evening to Sunday morning) is the Redwood Empire Council Camporee at Lake Mendocino.  Before we send in our application we need to be sure of sufficient numbers of scouts and adults going.  Be ready to give us a yes or no at the next troop meeting.  There will be a small cost for this event for registration and food.

Secondly, we have agreed to help staff Webelos Woods October 24-26 (Friday evening to Sunday morning) which will be at Camp Masonite-Navarro.  We are signed up to do the compass event.  Please be ready to tell us on Monday which scouts and adults are planning to go.  There is no cost for this event and meals are provided.

In November we decided to go backpacking at Pt. Reyes Nov. 8-9.  There will be a cost for park fee and food.  Since reservations have to be made well in advance, please be ready at the next troop meeting to tell us which scouts and adults plan to go.  If another weekend in November works better, be sure to let us know that also.

You can also let us know by return e-mail or phone before Monday also.

That's about it for now.  I hope your school year is off to a good start!
